Statement on Twitter threats

In response to the recent news articles surrounding the violent threats made towards Cllr. John Leech on Twitter, the following statement has been released:

A spokesperson for Councillor John Leech said: "John Leech was due to attend and take part in a basketball game with a local community group, and speak to the organisers about the work they do in the local community.

"John Leech takes his constituency work very seriously and has a proud record of getting involved in community projects, attending and taking part in community events and organisations. However as a result of these threats we had to take appropriate action to ensure the safety of John Leech and his colleagues.

"We take all threats against anybody whether it be councillors, MPs or volunteers very seriously. Councillors and MPs should feel comfortable working and attending events in their local community without the fear of being abused or threatened in any way.

"We thank Greater Manchester police for following this up. We have not asked for any further action.”
