Leese is conning the people of Manchester says Ramsbottom

The Liberal Democrats Leader in Manchester, Cllr Marc Ramsbottom has responded angrily to Richard Leese's claim that the council will need to make cuts of £80m over the next two years. He issued the following statement.

"It's a con for Richard Leese to claim more cuts are need to the Town Hall budget in Manchester. This is pure scaremongering yet again."

" This time last year he said that Sure Starts would have to close and swimming pools would shut, and they haven't. The report actually says that for every £1 the Council spends after 2013 it might need to find 5p savings because of Government funding cuts."

"Wanting to spend more money you don't have is not a cut. The Council has had to find savings and change the way it provides services, in some case for the better."

"The Council is still sitting on reserves of over £150million and has recently committed itself to building three new swimming pools, a new cultural complex and is continuing with the £170 Million revamp of the Town Hall and Central Library despite these difficulties times.

"The Council may also benefit by keeping more money from business rates thanks to new Government powers, which means there may not need to be any savings at all after 2013."
