Leech welcomes devolution plans but says Greater Manchester people should decide over elected mayor

South Manchester Liberal Democrat MP John Leech has welcome devolution plans to Manchester announced in the Autumn statement, but thinks that the people of Greater Manchester should have the final say over an elected mayor in a referendum.

This government has devolved much power to Greater Manchester, through the City Deal, called a  “Game Changer” by Manchester’s Chief Executive, Sir Howard Bernstein and the GM LEP Growth Deal and have promised further powers like the ability to re-regulate the buses.

John said today, “I have always argued that Greater Manchester should have more say over how it is run, and I support announcements made by both Nick Clegg and George Osborne in that direction.”

John added, “However, I think that it should be the people of Greater Manchester who decide how they are governed, not have an elected mayor imposed by Ministers. If the majority in Greater Manchester what an elected mayor, then so be it.”
