Peter, university is not a 24/7 activity, infact I had only 6 hours of lectures per week. While at university I worked full time as a restaurant manager, I was not 'standing idle' and in my spare time worked. In doing so I gained valuable work experience in relation to staff management, book keeping and customer relations - as well as getting a very good wage. While I was at university I know that all those who came from single parent families or whose parents did not earn over a certain amount, had their tuition fees paid for them. All those whose families earned over a certain amount had to pay part or all of their tuition fees. I still don't see a problem with that. As far as I'm concerned university should only be free to those that can't afford it and need help...at present this is the system that is in place. Furthermore Peter, how can you ignore the increasing numbers going to university since your day. How are we going to pay for that? All those tuition fees, all those grants, who is going to pay?
