John is one of many cross party M.P's to have signed a letter regarding Missle Shields and European Defence. Anyone else seen it?

Looks like a desperate attempt to pretend he is left wing after he voted with the Tories on the anti Europe treaty vote

any truth in the rumour labour is closing down Christies and renting the site off to the americans for use in the missile defence system, or is that just another scare tactic in the run up to the elections. Mind you, I suppose cruise missiles would be better off down canal street, so it's probably just a rumour

Peter, you are right, but you also failed to mention that those missles are aimed at various different public parks in Didsbury, don't you know, and that John Leech will be campaigning to save the parks as well!

Campaign for Clean Politics: Dr Yasmin Zalzala
yasminzalzala@hotmail.com 0161 224 6898,
Press Release
Yasmin Zalzala wins vital first step
In legal aid battle!
Yasmin Zalzala’s courtroom battle is a step nearer after a recommendation of reference to the Public Interest Panel to consider full funding.
The Funding Review Committee of the Legal Services Commission (formerly Legal Aid Board) after testimony from Dr Zalzala with documents describing the conduct of the Liberal Democrat nationally, regionally and locally, decided that other people may benefit from this case, especially
All potential candidates of any party
The Electorate of those candidates
The political process and landscape generally, with particular reference to the involvement of those in ethnic groups.
‘I explained how Lib Dem MP’s, MEP’s, Barristers, Solicitors, Councillors, an ex-mayor of Manchester and former President of the Association of University Teachers at Manchester University were involved in the discrimination.’, comments Dr Zalzala, and how the enquiries set up by the Lib Dems were mere window dressing. One enquiry’s report was changed by the regional executive and during one national investigation; an ethnic minority member was fast asleep next to the chairman!
‘On top of this, they ruined my reputation with lies in the press, especially the Leader of Manchester Liberal Democrats Simon Ashley and the Equality Spokesperson Alison Firth. The MP John Leech who is part of the Lib Dem front bench team in Parliament made up negative stories about me. I have put the details on the internet.
‘If this is the standard of conduct of Parliamentarians and councillors in leadership position, what can we expect from junior persons? And John Leech advertises himself as ‘Parliamentarian of the Year’ in leaflets! This is demeaning to the integrity and sovereignty of Britains Parliament, which is the mother of all Parliaments.
‘I explained to the committee that the usual path for minorities is to be parachuted into positions so the party look good. They know their place and white people rule ok. Britain deserves better political leadership especially when we are fighting terrorism.
‘Examples are the muslim councillors in Manchester. Not one seems to have complained when the council refurbished its sports facilities without taking the needs of Muslims for privacy. Changing facilities are unisex.
‘Muslim MEP Saj Karim, a loss by anyone’s standard, and two muslim councillors have recently defected from the Liberal Democrats in Manchester. This cannot be a coincidence.
‘I explained that I had nothing to hide and am happy for any allegations to be put in open court.
END

Yasmin, what newspaper published this? Anyone can write a press release, doesn't mean it will get published??! I really think you need to get over yourself, you weren't selected because you weren't very good. Your votes as an independent in the 2005 election clearly support that. Please, build a bridge and get over it!

Thursday Apr 10, 17:48
Right Alan,
So you can be my first witness when the trial starts. You can tell the world what the Lib Dems told you about me.
JJ
Thursday Apr 10, 21:11
What trial? What are you hoping to get out of this as an end result? A court order instructing each and every one of the Liberal Democrat members of Manchester Withington to vote for you as their PPC? A court order declaring that you should have been selected last time around and hence you should now be the MP, so please take your seat immediately? These things will not happen in any party. I don't think that any court would decide that you are the Labour or Conservative candidate either.
Ultimately, the members voted as they saw fit. One or two might have had bad motives for it, others might have preferred the other candidates for a whole raft of reasons, many utterly reasonable. Now if your case was that a lot of people voting in the selection should not have been allowed to vote then you might have a case, but if they were entitled to vote, were eligible members at the time of the vote, lived where they claimed to live, existed and made their decision in a secret ballot and chose not to vote for you then it's hard to see what you can get out of this entire legal process.
Frankly the notion that the entire membership were all brainwashed by a couple of remarks by an individual is insulting and would be insulting to the membership of any party. I cannot imagine any political party would allow somebody to stay on their approved candidates' list if they lost a selection and subsequently stood against the official candidate for that party in the election. No court of law is going to instruct the Liberal Democrats or any other party that you must be reinstated to their candidates' list under those circumstances. It won't happen - ever.
And what's changing rooms got to do with anything? I know of no unisex changing rooms, every changing area that I've seen in Greater Manchester is either segregated by gender or has individual cubicles where people change in private and attendants who ensure that nobody is misbehaving by looking over the top of cubicles or peering in through the wrong door. Why is it considered anti-islamic for people to get changed in a private cubicle? Are you really advocating people getting changed in a mixed-gender environment with no privacy? That makes no sense.

oh for christs sake, here we go again....it would be simpler to draw up a list of people who haven't "discriminated" (!!) against this woman than those who had.
Put me at the head of the list of those who'll discrimnate against you. Not on grounds of race, gender, politics, sexual orientation or anything else. On grounds that you are a BORE.

Right JJ, Peter
You both can come and say these views at the trial.
Could you kindly put your full names so we know who you both are you brave people?
JJ
Saturday Apr 12, 08:08
I ask again - what trial? Who or what is going to be on trial? Trials are for criminal matters - are the CPS in volved, or are you talking about a private criminal prosecution, or are you talking about a civil action?
If criminal, what criminal charges are you wanting to bring and against whom?
If you are talking about a civil action, who is it supposed to be against and what outcome are you wanting to achieve? Is this really only about trying to get compensation?

JJ
Saturday Apr 12, 17:57
It'a simple question, why do you need names and addresses in order to answer it? Given your postings here which indicate a certain enthusiasm for trying to bring legal action against people, are you surprised if people might not want to give you their name, address and NI numbers?
peter h
Monday Apr 14, 12:20
I'm not frightened of legal action from her or anybody else, and I'm not hiding behind anything. Calling somebody a bore is not actionable. She is boring she comes onto a site and highjacks it for her own agenda and it is BORING, and I will not be dictated to by her or anybody else as to how I describe myself on a website. No doubt her lawyers can track me if they have to. In my experience, people who threaten to litigate in this manner are desperately trying to frighten people off from finding something out that THEY want hidden. Witness Robert Maxwell historically as a case in point.
It is no surprise to me whatsoever that amidst all the hurlyburly and robust exchanges which go to and fro on this site, there is one person and one person only who keeps trying to intimidate people with talk of legal action. You can draw you own conclusions as to the motives. And I will offer odds against any of you ending up in court. People who try to squash free speech don't deserve airtime Yasmin. Stick your threats where the sun don't shine
peter h
Monday Apr 14, 12:38
incidentally yasmin, as I'm sure you will have seen, it is perfectly possible for lawyers to trace anybody on these websites if they wish to pursue them for libel. So please do your worst. It will be interesting to see exactly what libel your lawyers detect

JJ
Monday Apr 14, 20:42
This is very strange. People who issue press releases usually want them to be read by a wide variety of people, yet here we have a case where if somebody wants to know what on Earth it's all about, there's a demand for name and address. The question is a simple one which is likely to cross the mind of anybody reading the press release, namely, is this a crimrinal or a civil matter, who is to be on trial and for what?
I fail to understand the harm in indulging my passing curiosity and explain what outcome you have battled so furiously and so long to get legal aid for?
Alan
Tuesday Apr 15, 06:51

peter h
Tuesday Apr 15, 13:40
I'm so glad you know who I am. And I'm glad to know my shallow intellect is famous.
I am indeed a man. But I'm not poor. And the only hero I ever had was Thomas Merton and he died in 1968, and he didn't let me down, so I don't really understand what you're babbling on about.
But I'll tell you one thing I do understand. This Website isn't about me, or Alan, or JJ or any halfwitted megalomaniac who might post endless posts on this site.
It is or should be about John Leech and the other politicians who govern this country and their perfromances and abilities, not about you and your obsessions. The reason you are so widely disloiked here is not the rights and wrongs of your case but that you only ever talk about your self. GO AWAY YOU BORING WOMAN

Wednesday Apr 16, 08:26
who is thomas merton?
peter h
Wednesday Apr 16, 21:03
He was a trappist monk in America who eventually died in an accident in Thailand in 1968 on a journey of discovery in the Far East as he began to realise the profundity of Taoism & Buddhism and was beginning to edge towards those religions, and he was also very much a left wing thinker and wrote some damning critiques of western capitalism and its effects on ordinary people. My favourite idea of his was that it is abnormal for one man to want power over another, it meant that person must be mentally sick in order to need to excercise such power. Therefore by extension the more powerful the person the more mentally ill he is, and the most powerful men in the world - eg the US Presidents - must be the sickest. THat may all sound very esoteric then, but he was a major influence on 60s singers like Bob Dylan. For me as lapsed Catholic with connections with Asia he has always made a great deal of sense
oh cool something interesting
Wednesday Apr 16, 23:14
1. recommend a book to begin with.
2. so voter apathy is a sign of a healthy society? perhaps i am assuming too much, but it seems the logical conclusion
peter h
Thursday Apr 17, 09:22
if you're referring to my posting, best thing to do is go into the Catholic Truth Society Bookshop on Brazennose Street in Manchester and brouse the books by Thomas Merton. I'd suggest The Asian Journal of Thomas Merton. Or if it is Taoism which interests you, try Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu. Get one with a good introduction - Wordsworths Classics edition is good ISBN 1-85326-471-7. Or I can lend you them if you wish.
Re voter apathy. It's not the voters who are apathetic, it's the options which are pathetic. If you don't feel your vote will count, if you don't feel the politicians are listening, if you don't trust the politicians to represent your views any way and if you have a press that reduces everything to soundbites, people don't get motivated. They feel disntanced from the political process. But don't confuse that with them not caring. Of course they care. Politicians fail to engage them though.
thomas merton
Sunday Apr 20, 22:12
will do on the book advice.
point two meant that if seeking power was bad then the logical conclusion was not to stand as a candidate or even vote as your choice meant you sought power. if you back the winner, then you have, by extension, achieved power?
peter h
Monday Apr 21, 16:36
good point.
Trouble is in practice that you have to adopt the lesser evil principle, accepting that all politicians are to some degree corrupted and one of them is going to get into power whatever you do, so you vote for the least evil. Remember the adage that for evil to triumph it is necessary only for the good to do nothing.
But your point is sound to begin with.

Wednesday Apr 23, 10:57
So getting back to the original thread topic, (as opposed to the Yasmin Zalzara Show). I am glad that some M.P's from all parties are putting pen to paper regarding this nightmare that is the missle shield. What is the point of wasting so much money, when the Cold War has long gone, and the bigger threats are home grown terrorists?
Dave
Wednesday Apr 23, 11:01
Greg, I think you'll find that the three major political parties no longer lean "left" or "right", those definitions of the political spectrum are only relevant nowadays to parties such as SWP, BNP, etc. That is why you get people liking Blair to Thatcher, why traditional Tory voters will vote Labour, etc
peter h
Thursday Apr 24, 12:53
No point in wasting the money dave. just politicians with penile deficiency. switzerland has a part time army that goes to war on mountain bikes waving penknives. Hasnt done them any harm

Hi
I noticed yesterday that it is kaz afzal who is standing for the liberal democrats in fallowfield.
Is that correct? Did he not used to be called Qassim Afzal? Why do the posters say Kaz Afzal?
If anyone is going to say what has this got to do with John Leech Watch, the answer is that this gentlemen was the chair of the manchester liberal democrats while my dispute was going on and they disapproved my approval.
This was stated by lib dem party solicitors so it appears they are blaming it on him
peter h
Monday Apr 28, 23:29
Erm, so are you suggesting that Qassim Afzal was complicit in racism against you? I'm confused. Odd name for him to have if he was?
Alan
Tuesday Apr 29, 18:19
And what are you talking to people about LS? The fact that Gordon Brown has suffered the lowest approval ratings as PM in decades, the fact that he is indecisive, the fact that his government of cronies is leading the country into a recession, the fact that he is sending more and more of our troops into armed conflict without the correct kit or the pay that they deserve..... no wonder you're too busy to post in detail, there is alot for you to talk about... sorry... did I mention the 10p tax debacle and Northern Rock???

Dave
Wednesday Apr 30, 16:49
"Kettle calling pot black" springs to mind Yasmin. I am sure you are aware that I started the original thread to this post, which was about the missle defence proposal of the Labour Government, and how Leech along with sensible colleagues from Tories, Lib Dems and New Labour are protesting a such proposals. Tell me Yasmin, where have kept to this topic in this thread? I think I missed it!
Dave
Wednesday Apr 30, 16:53
I am not coming to the rescue of the boy leech or the Manchester Lib Dems, nor am I party treasurer, (although, on M.P salaries, I would welcome the job).
I am unsure why you mention the fact that I now live in Cumbria. Are you being Regionalist against me Yasmin?

Wednesday Apr 30, 21:35
All right LS. I'll give you a local topic. How come the road Keith Bradley lives on has got the best quality pavement in Didsbury, and none of the adjoining roads have? And when are rthe rest of us getting it? That's a local topic. The Labour Council can do something about that. Give West didsbury those pavements and I'll vote for you.

Wednesday Apr 30, 22:01
I've done a check on election rules (pretty easy on the internet). To set Yasmin's mind at ease (if that is possible) it seems that the rules changed a couple of years ago. One of those changes was that if somebody puts "known as", they appear on the ballot paper as the "known as". Apparently before then they appeared with their full moniker followed by "known as". So somebody like Paddy Ashdown would now be able to stand for election (if he wasn't in the Lords) as Paddy Ashdown, not his full name with a "known as".
Looking down the official Manchester City Council list, it seems that all strange middle names have vanished and several candidates are standing under how they are known - the list is now full of people called Mike, Tom, Bernie, Rob, Bob and others. In fact many candidates are standing under a shortened version of their given names when two years ago, they'd have had to stand under their full birth certificate jobs.
A cynic asks if most candidates last year hadn't cottoned on to that one?
Dave
Wednesday Apr 30, 22:06
What is also funny, is that we (the electorate) voted Bradley out, but he got into the back door of the House of Lords. Lovely "democracy" that New Labour have developed!
