Bangladesh Day 6

The morning was spent talking to workers from one of the shrimp processing factories in a local village on the outskirts of Khulna. This was the most interesting meeting so far, and gave me an opportunity to get the real picture of the working conditions in the workplace. First I heard from one of the trade union reps who had been sacked and then from a young woman who completely dominated the meeting. She has really benefitted from the training provided to women by SAFE to raise awareness of their rights. She had also been sacked, even though the dumbest employer would recognise that she would have a lot to offer in the workplace. She was a great example of the good work being done on the ground to empower women in a very male dominated  environment.
